In the 19 seventies, there was this ground breaking environmental movement that started in that region in india. Groups of villagers would gather together to block loggers from felling local forests. Now a disaster last month wiped out a hydropower dam and ultimately destroyed another hydro power plant about 15 miles away. The question is whether the approach that has been taken by many of the governments over the past couple of decades is sustainable and ultimately beneficial for them.

British and European officials on Wednesday issued a joint statement saying they’d discussed developing a “reciprocally beneficial relationship” to tackle Covid-19, after a top official in Brussels accused the UK of “vaccine nationalism”; a grounded container ship has blocked traffic in one of the world’s most critical shipping passages; and the rush to produce hydroelectric power in the Himalayas is adding to a crisis already exacerbated by climate change.
