Is There a Third Wave of the Internet?

Many argue we're now in a third wave of the internet. This time it's not an internet of things or value, but of communications,. The same concept, can we move value out of proprietary systems and use it to communicate on the internet? Once again, it's the key protocols, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, that have allowed these devices to bring that social change brought about by that second wave. It is using distributed ledger technology and cryptography to record ownership and transfer value on the internet rather than as assets and liabilities on commercial financial institutions' balance sheets.
