Literary Friction
Writers Engage With the Lives of Others
Katherine Scanlon and Octavia Butler talk about how writers approach writing about the lives of others. Kerry: I think it's a really, really interesting way for a writer to sort of direct their imagination. And taking a real person or an object or something from life as you're starting point is a really great way of giving yourself some parameters from which to explore whatever you're going to explore. But maybe one of the pitfalls of it is that no matter how well or how innovatively written, if the real person is based on is well known, and I'm not very interested in them, then I won't read it.
