The sand hogs were mostly immigrants, irish, italian, west indian, polish. Dozens got sick on this project. It wasn't quite as deadly as the brooklyn bridge caisons. But there were some fatalities associated with the holland tunnel. And its most famous victim, perhaps, was the chief engineer himself, clifford melbourne holland.
