The Doctrine of Analogy Regarding Divine Names

Every perfection of every creature is in some way similar to him. When applied to God, terms signify a perfection higher and more eminent than what is found in the categories. But because they're like him a little bit, just a little, we can apply those terms to God on the basis of our familiarity with the things in the created order in the world of the categories.
