Spotify was in the UK for five years before they stepped foot in the US. That gave them, I think, a bit more runway and honestly helped them because this is home basis where a lot of the major record labels have bases there. But obviously as you've seen, as Spotify became more and more powerful, those conversations started to be less pleasant... And then now on average, you're looking at Spotify paying 70 cents of every dollar that they get to rights holders.

Dan Runcie is a music industry analyst, writer, and the founder of the newsletter and media platform “Trapital.” Trapital focuses on the business strategies of hip-hop and offers insights into the intersection of culture and commerce in the industry. Runcie has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Billboard, and Forbes.
