The Atlantic Ocean's pattern of warming and cooling tends to switch about every 70 or so years perhaps due to the regular ocean conveyor belt currents. Scientists think it may also be affected lately through climate change. So El Nino is warmer pacific ocean waters and yes La Nina is cooler and per Trevor's question more predictable.
