The book is about artificial intelligence, particularly large language models like gpt three. These are trained on the entire corpuse of writing that human beings have put on the internet over the last 30 or forty years. When it is composing a story, or when it is answering a question about some fact in history, on some level, its synthesizing the ideas and thoughts of billions of people that have been published,. you know, on line for several decades.
