I think people are far too ready to anthropomorphize animals and project sort of intent onto them without thinking of what is really less satisfying, but much more likely outcome. That the animal isn't as smart as you think is in this one particular way that we measure human intelligence,. But is smarter in another way that we don't tend to consider when considering human intelligence which is what the cats are doing.
