The Shangri-La's were one of the few new American acts to break through in a year when British bands dominated the US charts. The lead with the pack brilliantly fused to very different but equally melodramatic pop subgenres. It is in many ways the ultimate death disc, and it's not surprising that the genre largely died after that.
