John hughes, who wrote the film, called it a huge disappointment. The director himself did not seem to like the move very much. In the novel, mary elizabeth hull dies in a fire at the library. In the film, she succumbs to the complications of her alcoholism. We are all being posed with too many choices, especially round luggage.
