Hinton coauthered with ike ronald williams on a back propagation paper in the mid eighties. The irancontra affair really bothered hinton and his wife, so they moved to canada. That decision would have a knock-on effect 20 years later as all these companies decide they need the talent there. Some understood it, some were sceptical. It is about the areas they worked in even though the technology had proven itself with speech recognition. Many people were convinced it would not work with images.
