Melissa Fisher's Disabilities Interacted With the Welfare and Food Systems
Melissa Fisher is an artist and former carer living in Adelaide. She suffers from hydrogen titus, the perotiva, a skin condition that causes irregular and debilitating pain and abscesses all over her body during flare-ups. In November 2021, Fisher was diagnosed with malnutrition and scurvy after months of eating food that didn't include enough vitamin C and other core minerals. Her income is the main reason she is malnourished. While she supplements her JobSeeker payment with sales from her art practice, she isn't able to access food relief services because she doesn't have a car.
