When you don't have to attend to what's going on around you, maybe you're taking a walk or doing something that's easy like doing the dishes. That's probably the default mode network kicking in. And interestingly, it was only discovered for pretty recently, like in the last decade or so. There was one paper where they put both right and left-handed individuals in a brain scanner,. They didn't really find a lateralized differences in this default mode network. So it suggests the left-brain brain brain thing doesn't really pan out using this technique.
