HPI 09 - Suffering and Smiling - the Buddha

History of Philosophy: India, Africana, China

CHAPTER

Introduction

The Buddha's teaching centers on the four noble truths. All of us have a problem so pervasive and difficult to escape that we usually fail to perceive it as a problem at all. Death will free us from only our current portion of suffering and deliver us directly to another. Only by attaining a better understanding of that predicament can we come to understand that we have no selves that need to be set free in the first place.
