The Importance of Ethnicity in South Sudan
The two largest ethnic groups in South Sudan play a very big part in the conflict. It's less driven by the ethnic divide than the ethnic divide has been manipulated time and time again to be utilized by different players, says John Defterios. In the lead up to the war that broke out in 2013, you saw a real consolidation of power within the kind of small influential hard line Dinka community of Dinka leadership around Salva here. But it was used on both sides after the war broke out.
