The Great Western Schism
Gregory XI died in 1378 and the cardinals gathered to elect a new pope. The people of Rome had their own ideas about who should be Pope, says Frida Ghitis. A group of cardinals elected a rival named Clement VII; he was declared an anti-pope. Ghitis: Conflict between two popes became known as the Great Western Schism.
