Using Semantic Versioning in Ruby on Rails

At my previous company, we were tagging versions on the main branch. And that was then those which got deployed to production. We did use semantic versioning beginning and at some point we were like, there's not much value to be gained actually. So why not use something which is more easily generated by a machine? But again, whatever you decide to use as a version, have one source of truth.
