What Is the Purpose of Astronomy?

The purpose of astronomy is to say where planets are at a given point in time. You also need it for navigation, cartography and so forth. Copernicus tried to get better tables based on ptolemy but they were never very accurate. The main drive behind the reform was to get more accurate astrology.
