It's harder for China to put up the growth numbers that they should put up. A lot of the party's legitimacy post-Mao has been because they've been able to ensure rising standard living. So we're in this era of great power competition. But if there is great power competition, then it's hard for there to be totally independent entities. Literally neutral states end up being pariahs in various ways.
