The story didn't coalesce into a static narrative until 1831, 43 years after it purportedly occurred. In the German Pollock's journal, published 1788, no mention is made of the brandy or schnapps. At least one contemporary source attests to the basics of the incident but says the whole thing was incited by rowdy locals.
