Shah's career hit a glass ceiling. Eventually, hip-hop's memory of the first female MC started to fade too. Until 10 years later, when she was in a record store and spotted a sugar hill compilation on sale for $100. Shah wasn't making money, but clearly somebody was. She decided not to take it lying down. In 1997, Shah and her former label mates filed the suit. They were seeking royalties as well as other fees from Sylvia,. Her husband, Joe Robinson, and their next of kin who were now running the company.
