The History of the English Civil War
The period that succeeds the Civil War is sometimes called the Interregnum. It's an 11-year period during which various different forms of republicanism were tried by those in command. Charles I attempted to rule without parliament, and thus angered members of political nation who felt they should be part of politics. The only way that these issues can be settled is on the battlefield, basically. And then out of that sort of stalemate, two really important things happen in England.
