The Consequences of Quiet Luxury
The wealthy of the West perpetuating an idea of what is loud or ostentatious has been a way of othering people of color and their culture since the dawn of time. Quiet luxury is presented as the opposite of the ostentatian in excess of plebeians and the nouveau reach. When people valorize stealth wealth, they are repudiating the aesthetic of people who have been denied access to the brands and resources that make this look possible. It's a rejection, even if unconscious, of the aesthetic values of many people of color.
