The Cumberland Mountains are the first real mountains that John Muir ever touched or eyes beheld. The ascent was by a nearly regular zigzag slope, mostly covered up like a tunnel by over-arching oaks. We've reached the end of this first leg of our journey with John Muir and his thousand-mile walk to the Gulf. I think we'll leave the rest of the 900 miles for another evening. Until our next boring book, good night.
