Elias Budinow and the Cherokee Council
Elias Budinow was the editor of the Cherokee Phoenix, a newspaper published in Nue Chota, Georgia. In 1834 he wrote an article suggesting that if a new treaty with the U.S. government could be signed, the Cherokee could at least secure more money and better terms for giving up their land. The Cherokee Council condemned the pro-treaty articles and Budinow soon resigned his position as the paper's editor. "What used to be the sound of Cherokee prosperity is now more than likely a man from Georgia building a house on your people's land"
