The two wings could have coexisted as a federation or as a union. Even if they were to become two countries they could have done so amicably with the two countries maintaining flinty relationships. They could have drawn a road map towards sovereignty. Any scenario would have been better than what happened. Still the loss that is mourned in Pakistan is that of separation. Not at the hundreds of thousands of lives lost. How many trains before we wash away the sins of our past?
