Is There a Difference Between Expertise and Political Prudence?
There's kind of two different dimensions, I feel like, two expertise. One is the substantive dimension as in what are you an expert in and the other is the social dimension, which is do people give you authority based upon it? And I think what was weird in the ancient times is that the people who had the authority weren't necessarily experts. You want the doctor who knows medicine, even if they don't know philosophy rather than the philosopher who doesn't know medicine. The idea that we can just defer to the experts in all cases, it's not true, right? Like an expert is an expert about a virus is in no position to balance constitutional rights.
