The Importance of Ideology in Democracy

Alexis de Tocqueville divides parties in a democratic society into what he calls grand parties or great parties and small parties. The terms of course are the exact opposite of what you would think if you're thinking in terms of size according to trumpeter. Even a party motivated by nearly ideology might for tactical reasons shove aside one of its more controversial things that it supports in order to gain in all the other policies that it supports. Once someone has successfully conquered the political landscape and becomes a majority there is a necessity  that policy will be worked into one particular frame that's a say that's not just an inevitability.
