When England broke from the Church of Rome in the 16th century, one area in which they made no break was in the kind of law that the church uses. He united what seemed like really different bits of law ecclesiastical law, international law, and the Admiralty courts. And yet he did all of those things, and that's not incidental to his kind of ability to think of law in new ways and think of personhood in new ways.
