If i die to morrow, i won't see my children grow up more than they have done already. But i could for many hundreds of years without getting a cheque from bill gates. So that doesn't seem a deprivation. That seems something different. We need some way to distinguish the cases. And a plausible thought is to say we need to pay attention to how likely was it that this good thing that didn't come your way would have come your way? If you get hit crossing the street by a car, cause you were to busy discussing philosophy and didn't pay attention, then it's a near miss that you didn't avoid.
