Can We Really Get Better at Recycling?
New plastic is so cheap to make that it just doesn't really make much economic sense for companies to recycle right now, especially in the developing world. And a lot of plastic waste is actually just difficult to recycle. Even if in Europe and North America we were able to recycle 100% of our plastic waste, it would only have a small impact on plastic waste globally. Of course, refusing a plastic straw at a bar or restaurant is a good thing if you don't need it, but it has an absolutely tiny impact on the global plastic problem.
