Michel Foucault's influence can't be understated here. He clarifies that the religious imperatives of previous eras didn't disappear. Instead, they were reconstituted and redeployed in secular frameworks. So this turn to a kind of secular Orientalism then was no longer just about proffering up Europe and Christianity. It was tied to systematic accumulation of human beings and territories.
