Appius claudius was censor for five unprecedented years. Set off a fresh fire storm when his term of office expired. After 18 months, he shocked everyone by declaring that he would not be stepping down. Rome was aghast at this sacrilege. He had sworn an oath to step down, and now flouted it with all the huboris of a greek tragic hero.
