In the late 80s, a couple of young researchers came up with this really ingenious experiment. They wanted to tease out what's more important background knowledge of a topic or sort of general reading comprehension ability. And they found that kids who were supposedly poor readers, but knew a lot about baseball did a lot better than those who didn't know much about baseball.
