The Last Utopian, Human Rights in History
This is a war on terror book. A full fourth of it is about the year since september eleventh, two thousand one. And it ends with not just obama, but donald trump. The argument of the last utopia is that human rights were insufficient and foreclosed better possibilities. I think that's true of the laws of war, for all its virtues. But i actually want to claim that we should worry, as tolstoy did, that the laws ofwar actually promote some evil along the obvious good with which we associate them.
