Augustine was a towering intellect, and he published over five million words. One of his monster works, perhaps his greatest intellectual achievement, was his book, the city of god. He wrote this not so much trying to make sense of it as to point out that no earthly realm, not even a christian empire, could be an eternal city. It's clear that augustine saw warfare, even just warfare, as a tragic necessity in this earthly city which can only ever be partially christianized through principles he laid down.
