The Role of the Motor Cortex in Strokes

The brain can change its functional a little bit to compensate for large losses in functional areas. The shoulder is the farthest away from the hand but closest to these new in-between areas that we found. If you have a stroke that really destroys your hand function, it may have affected your wrist and your shoulder. We think it's possible that these new in between areas in the motor cortex may be able to start taking progressively taking over the function of the proximal, the nearby lost areas.
