The Moral Motivation of the Young German Nihilists
Strauss says there were young Germans who were disgusted by both of those prospects. They absolutely rejected liberalism outright because they felt that it emptied human life of all genuine depth, seriousness and significance. For similar reasons, they thought the communist or left alternative was the worst nightmare. And so he says what they needed are old fashioned teachers who could understand and speak to and address and guide the moral protest that they had.
