My mother has had some skin cancers beforehand. She gets a regular, I think yearly dermatology examination. A year ago she went and it was present, but there was just too many for the dermatologist to burn off or freeze off. It's not pigmented, like it wasn't a melanoma. That would be a concern if it's a pigmented lesion. But this was just a scaly one, which is either a squamous cell carcinoma or a base or cell carcinoma - we'll talk about that later.
One of the four tissue types of the body, epithelia lines and protects our organs from the external and internal environment. In this episode, Dr Matt & Dr Mike explain how the different shape and layers of epithelia tell you what function it performs (form = functions) and highlight examples in the body where you can find each type. They also explore cancer, metaplasia, dysplasia, and Dr Matt's mums skin cancer diagnosis and surgery.
