I kept hearing about how developers with no experience have a really hard time getting a job. So I read this book at the time by Charlie Hoenn called the recession proof graduate. And he basically talks about this strategy of pitching yourself as an intern for a few months. For me, I looked at it as what I really wanted was some real world experience.
