The Power of a Bottle

As a system, the highway seems to have better through put at around 55 to 60 miles an hour than at higher speeds. But as individual drivers, we essentially act like grains of rice being poured quickly. We seek to maximize our individual speed and following distance, without regard for how that might affect the whole system. The winner was a science writer named paul hoss who suggested a simple retaphor.
