Aristotle instructed his pupils in oratory, as well as in philosophy. He wrote a highly influential treatise on the subject titled rhetoric. Even after the Greek states lost their independence and rhetoric ceased to have any political importance, it still remained the centerpiece of higher education. The hostility between practitioners of rhetoric and those who practice philosophy would endure almost throughout antiquity.
