Peter Jackson wanted to make three Lord of the Rings movies at once. He thought it was going to cost $60 million per movie but ended up costing like a hundred over $100 million each. The films were made concurrently one year after another. They had never spent that much money on anything and it was if they didn't get the success for the first movie it would bankrupt them.
