And this produces a distorted understanding of thomas as a pure philosopher or detached rationalist. The claim that god makes the world ex milo is functionally equivalent to the assertion that god is the unique reality in which essence and existence coincide. For anything that is marked by distinction between quiditas and octus descendi would require ultimately the staining influence of the one whose very essence is to be God.
