When 5G was first proposed, the proposal was to use the millimeter wave spectrum. This is a super high frequency part of the spectrum that for years people thought was basically impossible to work with. Now it can give you like 10 gig internet, but it needs to be really close to you. The telecoms were starting to build this out and they even rebranded a bunch of LTE stuff to be 5G.

Qualcomm, or “Quality Communications” — despite being one of the largest technology companies in the world, few people know the absolutely amazing technological and business history behind it. Seriously, this story is on par with Nvidia, TSMC and all the great semiconductor giants.
