The new cards view is laid out so that it can be laid out vertically. It's supposed we're trying to offer you what you need in order to reduce cognitive burden and make it so you can quickly get the messages that you want to. We weren't able to finish everything that we want to have in these new cards view because it took a fair amount of time to make it as performant as it was in one or two. This is just the first step towards more views options, including dynamic row options like Gmail uses.
