The City-State
A city-state is an independent state-level political unit focused on a city. The ancient Greeks seem to have used those two senses of the term polis interchangeably. Urbanization in the sense of people coming together to live in a shared physical space that had some visible markers of city-ness and state formation, meaning the emergence or deliberate construction of institutions around the polis.
