Gaiman plays with the idea of this young child having pale skin and, you know, black hair and sharp, yellow teeth. She basically like reads Snow White as a vampire, right? And that's what she has to get rid of because this creature is a threat to her kingdom. He brings in gothic elements explicitly into this, which is not in fairy tales don't tend not to have like a gothic stylization.
