I think that a lot of this clash between edna and larger society is actually because of her artistic ambitions, rather than her status as a woman. The novel doesn't judge madame ratignole for being a devoted wife and mother. Rather, it admires her. She has the artistry, to a certain extent, that edna ires but she doesn't have the ambition to try and do something with that.
